#4 Don’t Go Nuts, Give Nuts!

Be sure to read the first post in Our KIND of Christmas to get the most of out of our Holiday Blog Series!!

One day after school, Drew couldn’t wait to show me what he had in his pockets. I prepared myself for anything as he unveiled that his pockets were full of…pecans.

He’d gathered pecans from the ground under my mom’s pecan tree. He was so excited as he told me, “I got these to share with my family.” He beamed with pride as he laid them out and showed me each one.

Though it can be very hard at times, I’m a firm believer that if you listen, the answers are always right in front of you. So, when Drew said he wanted to share those pecans with his family, I listened.

But this meant change...oh no, dreaded change. I’d been trying to figure out how to put a stop to so much unnecessary gift giving during the holidays. But I struggled as I worried about what others might think. It’s so easy to get caught in that trap. The what-will-they-think-of-me trap is very dangerous. It can truly harm YOU and who YOU really are. Determined, I wiggled my way out of the trap and moved forward.

We helped Drew gather more fresh pecans from my mom’s pecan tree. As a family we shopped for and hand-picked vintage nutcrackers for each family on our gift list. Then, we filled a basket with the pecans and a few other assorted nuts. I wrote a card for each basket, sharing the story about Drew and his pecans. The card ended like this:

Drew is a little squirrelly sometimes,

and life is always nuts.

So, it couldn’t be more fitting that,

each time you eat a nut,

you’ll think of us!

Don't go nuts this holiday season!
